On Inspiration

I don't believe that even Arnold Palmer meant to use this quote as anything other than inspiration for his game and his life. The words and very powerful statement were not meant to be used to destroy the lives of people who are struggling in this world by those who are very apt at doing so with malevolent intentions and regard themselves as being somehow superior to those who are not living the way they feel they should in their world.

Report Cards: Advice & Suggested Comments for Teachers (Grades K-12) - TeacherVision.com
Report Card Day - November 16th - Awards, Certificates and Promotions.  With recent medical and family issues, we've had to make a few slight adjustments and work a rounds, but Sarah's done better than expected and we're working to make sure we're ready to move on to new material while integrating learned lessons.   We discussed the recent elections, but nothing further than who was elected.  We remembered our veterans on Veterans Day and I spoke on behalf of our apartment, in English from the Beatitudes and from the Sermon on the Mount for I felt that on the Ceremonial Religious Holiday that we also studied, All Hallows Eve, All Saints Day and All Souls Day, we honored and respected the rites and ceremonies rooted in my religion and Sarah got to wear her dress and go out and take a few pretty pictures outside while I brought her in the court (play) yard where they would set up the next evening with a Karaoke Machine, Wireless Mikes, a Guitar with Sheet Music and Music, Prayers, Readings and Remembrances.  We've had a lot of things going on and have just tried to keep everything going well.  Sarah has made great use not only with entertainment, but educationally with her new X-Box.  When I can get a bit of energy and health restored to my world, hopefully we'll be able to perform more of the activities and I can get her entertained into actually working with me to learn how to do some of the things.  We're looking at our Thanksgiving Holiday coming up the day after report card day and will return to school again the day after her neurology appointment.  I'm supposed to make sure that she's rested and kept more calm and in a low stress environment (me too having to take care of her) until her doctor sees her and we can make sure that everything's alright.  She seems to be doing much better and in better spirits, but with Daylight Savings time and all sorts of other events going on right now things have been in a total upheaval.  Everything will work out.  We did our best to remain both religiously, politically, and in other matters that don't concern us, for the most part, neutral, because things get rather hectic when you're absolutely misunderstood or speculation leaves you very exhausted without even taking part in things of that nature.  Anyway, we hope you all had a peaceful time if you celebrated or honored any of the above and you will have a Happy Thanksgiving.  Lee and Sarah.

Programs for Low-Income Individuals and Families
You may qualify if you meet the requirements of the programs that you are applying for.  You don't know until you are in need and you try.  Everyone needs a little help every once in a while to sustain vital support for legitimate reasons.  Thanks for visiting our blog, viewing our site, and please, if you know of any agencies that may offer similar programs and support, let us know.  We still have about ten pages worth to enter and are starting on our Veterans, Special Needs, and other pages to bring together with our website at http://www.independentlearningsolutions.org .
We don't sponsor any of the programs or offer the support either directly or inadvertently from our company; however we just make getting the information a bit easier for people in need of resources.  Thanks.  ILS.

Pledge of Allegiance

                Pledge of Allegiance

We are proud to say our Pledge of Allegiance in our classroom.

Veterans Day / Memorial Day - Sarah's Day to Learn About Veterans Day.

Blackwell's Best - Veterans Day / Memorial Day

A nice poem about Veterans Day and Several Links to Veterans Day Information.  Today, we're diverting from our regular school regimen to prepare for, to study and to learn about why we will be observing and remembering Veteran's Day, why it is so special and what it means to us.  We know that we not only have Presidential Debates going on right now, the Presidential Election is drawing near, but we will be looking forward to words of faith and leadership from our Commander and Chief, The President of the United States.  This day also gives great meaning to the reason that we say our "Pledge of Allegiance" in our classroom every day.  I would definitely regard today's lesson as a necessary part of the American Culture and World History.

Phi Mu: Our Mission and Creed

Our Mission and Creed

Although I never quite went the route of my Grand Mother and Mother who were both Phi Mu at L.S.U., Baton Rouge, I was always told that I was to be the third generation to pledge; however my life took me in a very different direction and even though I ended up in a L.S.U. School in New Orleans, Louisiana on my own merits, I was not ever in a position with a family, work and my education to focus my directives toward a sorority (I'm not sure if they even had a Phi Mu Chapter at either UNO or LSU Medical Center School of Nursing - regardless of whether sisters passed that way or not.  I can say that I do know a little about the society through family and although can say that I felt a very strong compassion to post their site and creed as I have a special needs child and they support such a great cause.  Although most people think that life is easy to get dressed with your best smile on and be the person you are, it's just as easy to go from being at the center of your universe to a place that you would never imagine or being with or working with people that are so very different from you - or your own life making a drastic change.  You just have to keep on believing in yourself and know that you have been to that mountain many times and have seen the winds of change too and we are all essentially the same when we come down.   This is posted for all of those who so loyally devoted their time and efforts to the devotion of remembering their pledge.

There is also another Coating Called Osmokote; however, the one that is supposed to really work best and above ChemPrime, the Green Liquid that kills the rust is a Rust Inhibitor sold by DuPont that was about $30.00 Gallon back in 1987.  I can not remember the name, or if it's still marketed; however it was sold by DuPont and, after light sand-blasting, if necessary, allowed you to coat the metal with the product and do nothing else.  This item basically killed any oxygen in the rust; killing any further decay and turned the object black where it was treated.

Texas Education Agency - Welcome

Texas Education Agency - Welcome

For those who have children and / or adult children who are trying to recover, people who are in the hospital or have to stay at home during times of recovery, therapy or transition between a state of hospitalization to therapy and back to school, for those who have parents who travel and need to keep their children near, for those who are serious about making sure that their children receive the proper type of instruction for areas that they are lacking stimulation or mentor-ship in and may need a bit more assistance - or for special needs children in a class with several other children : each with different needs and yours is not getting the quality one-on-one instruction that is necessary to even capture any form of attention to learn.  Structure is up to you 3 days per week, 5 days per week - whatever is necessary; however if you plan on transitioning back into a public school setting at any time at all and expect to have any results, you need to keep accurate documentation, make sure that the child is participating and you are keeping track of progress and areas of weaknesses.  Set goals and expectations, don't be too hard on yourself or your child and if you find you don't have enough time or need to re-structure, just get it done.  As long as you are sincerely trying, you'll find very much satisfaction in watching the progress.  T.E.A. is an agency that will assist you in how to formally un-inroll your child from school to avoid truancy issues, find the proper materials to study (books to purchase) if you plan on putting them back into public school later or getting a G.E.D., and/or let you know that you will need to do some thinking about your child's specific needs, possibly help in getting them tested to find out what you need to do and find your own resources for independent work.  They can assist with home-bound teachers, and also support groups who can help with ideas, sponsors, informational tools, supplies, websites, financial and other important resources and even your child's physician / social worker may have helpful suggestions.  Nothing is carved in stone and nothing is ever finite as you teach, you grow and so does your child.  You need to allow for many changes and many things to "evolve".  This takes a lot of time and patience and some parents are trying hard and even working while they home-school.  Some even have a home-bound teacher work with their child 3-5 days per week at the house or if they need (in a reasonably, chaperoned public environment) like the library or other place where they are in constant communication and can be supervised and instructed with little or no difficulty.  There are even special centers, day therapy centers and hospitals set up with side rooms especially for such.  There are so many websites that are both easy to subscribe to for the year and also free ones on the internet and computers can be purchased for such a reasonable price now that even a used business class laptop or desktop with WiFi or LAN can be purchased for anywhere between $175.00-$450.00 depending on your (and your child's needs).  Most people don't want to go out and purchase a brand new system or can't afford one for their child and that's another service that we provide.  We actually sell the computers.  We don't lease or rent them, but we do give very good deals on computers if you need one for a nice, professional home school setting, for appointments, meetings, keeping in touch with newsgroups, support groups, doctors, synchronizing your planner, your cellular phones and day to day work.  Call T.E.A. for information regarding how to start home-bound or what books they recommend if your are planning on placing your child in a specific grade (because you want them re-tested for the level they are actually functioning at and need the curriculum to keep them going until you can get them up to the level of speed they can support). Some children need home-school with mother/father/child interaction and different goals/achievements/progress reports and reward systems in place to let them know when they have done good.  Try to keep track of a reasonable schedule and remember holidays and don't push yourself or your child too hard or expect too much because you will not get the best results.  Expect good days and bad days and frustration.  Don't expect miracles because they will come when you least expect them and you will start to see small things that you never imagined.  Click Here to Visit T.E.A. Online for Information

I was working today trying to get Sarah interested in several topics.  She did very well off and on and got frustrated doing some tasks.  With a special needs child, the frustration point in both the teacher and student need to be addressed, realized and taken into account; especially with parents home-schooling.  However, instead of working with ONLY paper media or just coins in front of Sarah, I found several videos that she really found interest in that she actually paid attention to and liked pertaining to counting money.  LLO'C

Really Cool Stuff

We saved a Pencil Bag that we got for Free a few years ago, a few neat ideas to praise her for good work, putting things that are colorful like her pencils with erasers on top and glue and scissors with colored handles (blunt - so she won't cut herself on accident) in the bag so she knows it's hers.  We tried to place a few items in her back pack and she knows it's hers, but she doesn't want her things left in it.  She's still trying to get used to the newness of things and I believe that she will do well and we will find a way to work our way into a more settled and relaxed routine (even with our routines, life-style and work), and do very well once school has gotten a bit more under-way.  Thanks for all of the exceptional suggestions and work on the educations websites and materials that we use from day to day to everyone that participates.  I will try to get a couple of photos from our first day uploaded when I figure the app out.  We had our ups and downs, but we made through our first two days.  I'm very grateful.

First Day of School

Sarah started school the day after Labor Day.  She's on her second day and we're getting back into the classroom.  We have our new supplies and she's already explored her pencil bag, back-pack and has been curious.  She wants to do a few arts and crafts and we'll have to start getting a few neat ideas together to work on.

Make a Home School Schedule - Great Homeschooling Schedules

Make a Home School Schedule - Great Homeschooling Schedules

As a mother, a teacher, a professional, a home-based business owner and caretaker of a special needs child, this article is definitely related to the human being!!!  I highly recommend that it be read by anyone that doesn't rely on the dropping off and picking up your child at school where you and the child have a secondary relationship to an institution.

The Perfect Homeschooling Schedule

Home School Schedule - Clocks
Remember - your family is unique - and you need a plan that suits YOU. A great homeschooling schedule is only great if it works FOR you - not against you.
Here are some things to bear in mind..

  • Consider your family. Are you really going to be able to structure their time? Schedules just do not work with some homeschooling families!

  • Don't stress it. It's not going to be written in stone! If your home school schedule is intimidating you, bin it and start again.

  • Be flexible. Things change and homeschooling isn't an exact science. If things aren't working according to the schedule - change the schedule.

  • Keep it fresh. Doing the same thing day in day out will get boring for everyone. Try changing your schedule once in a while - or throw something new into the mix.

  • If you are going to carve out some time in the day then it is best to ring-fence that time. Don't make appointments during that time. Don't answer the phone, and don't allow pop-in visitors. It may take a little time but be firm - everyone will get used to it.

  • What Type of Schedule?

Next you need to think about what type of schedule you would like.
Are you a perfectionist who needs every second organised? Or can you work with something looser?
  • Do you really need a home school schedule at all? Sometimes a checklist of things to get done each week is more flexible. Or just reviewing your goals on a monthly basis to make sure your homeschool is on track.

  • What are your state laws. Does it specify how many days per year you must homeschool? Or how many hours per week?

  • How many days are you going to school? Are you going to work only mornings? 5 days a week? or 4? or 3?

  • Thought I'd share an idea that works for us.
We have a Friday Fun Day every week. I homeschool on a four hours a day , four days a week schedule - and if all goals have been achieved and weeks work completed, we have our fun day. In 8 years we have hardly missed a Fun Friday. On this day we watch educational dvds, work on projects, play educational games, go on nature walks, field trips etc. I have found that this helps to break the monotony of structured learning, encourage self disipline, responsibility and allows the child to learn work ethics.
Should someone not be complete they may not participate (even though this is often harder on me than the child, I know that they are learning about choices and consequences). We incorporate art, craft and music in our daily program.
Hope this is helpful to someone.

    Enjoy homeschooling
    Judy from South Africa

  • Are you going to have a set time? Think you have to? Nah! If you know what you want to achieve you can sneak schooling in all day long!! In this case a checklist type schedule might work best for you.

  • When will it end!! Are you going to end at a set time? Or are you going to finish when the work finishes (Oh! Really - what if they get it all done in 45 minutes? What if it is taking till midnight!).

  • How flexible are you going to be? If you are looking at the Taj Mahal and your homeschooler want to go off and build a life sized model including doing the complex calculations regarding the architecture, are you going to say "Sorry - we have got this other workbook to do." You may need to build flexibility into your home school schedule.

  • How much influence are the children going to have. You might have a goal that your self-directed learning child do some Math this month. Are you going to allow the child to decide when and how? Or are you going to dictate the schedule? (This is where you need to be clear about your methods!).

  • Pulling it Together

Ok - lets take a look at putting your home school schedule together.
See a walk-through of how Sandy does her Homeschool Scheduling in a notebook.

Look at your list of goals and subjects. What are the regular subjects - the ones that are easy to work through on a daily or weekly basis. Which ones do you only need to cover once a week.
What are you going to throw in for fun?
Start planning out a typical week and then break that down into days.
It helps to work on index cards.
Write out each subject you want to cover on it's own card - if you are covering math five times a week, then write out 5 index cards with the word MATH on it.
This makes it easier to rearrange the subjects by day until you are happy with them.

Need a form to help you
    work it all out?
Donna Young has lots of free printable forms for homeschooling. (But do come back to check out my examples!!)

    Hmm... Will it work?

Remember the goal of my website was to help you inspire your children to learn.
Take a good long look at your schedule. Does it meet your homeschooling goals? Does it inspire you?
If it doesn't inspire you it won't inspire your children!
A good home school schedule will want to make you get started right away. If yours is lacklustre then you have missed something.
Don't worry - you can always give it a try and work out what's missing. If it helps - read through the examples below and see if you can come back to it with fresh eyes.

edHelperSubscribed over the past couple of days to make sure that Sarah has not only the help that she's been getting through-out the past school year with the EXCELLENT resources available online and with what media-rich environment that we have available to us, but we had plans to subscribe when we were financially able to do so and had saved enough money for emergencies, transportation and, of course personal necessities and Sarah's Education.  This site was and is a bit costly, but it covers topics from pre-kindergarten to well into High School and entry-level college in some instances that are HIGHLY USEFUL, BENEFICIAL and MANDATORY in today's world of competitive education.  I like the resource and waited long enough.  I'm pleased and have just started working on school supplies, re-arranging our office-equipment and school-area equipment, giving Sarah an area that's separate to play with her toys when she wants, and also sorting through things, boxing up last year's lessons and plans that are already scanned and uploaded to the web, and trying to re-structure our business and find the best avenues for equipment, upgrades, working plans and things that suit our life-style without being overly-zealous, UN-informed, or just taking on too much to handle.  I have a lot of receipts to enter, a lot of hours to log, a lot of work left to do, school is coming up, starting to order supplies, having to re-wire and make sure that the correct equipment is in the right area for the correct job, get all systems networked, and make sure that we have the ability to provide food and necessities for school.  We did very well last year and this is VERY STRESSFUL.  All I can be is honest and this is it.  Believe it or not, she's made progress for her condition and I don't want to lose what I have put together on a budget that's nowhere near public school.  I only pray that there is understanding and help with people who do understand how difficult home schooling can be.  We need to get out on cool and pretty days and explore and take pictures and talk about what we see and explore.  We need to do things too.  Somehow, the METRO bus stopped running down our street, so we have no transportation whatsoever without calling a Medicaid Cab and that's just to go to a doctor's visit.  Things aren't easy for us and we can only pray that somehow we'll be able to do things.  We've started a garden and are trying to understand the how and why of the way things work.  We need to make sure that we have a color scanner to the computer working in the back room and we also need to make sure that we have a magnanimous year.  LLO'C

The Entrepreneurial Spirit of the American Citizen | Conservative News, Views & Books
The United States Constitution and The Charters of Freedom

Since we've been studying America and the ways we've had to structure, work, re-structure and survive through meager means for three years in a computer / design firm which we legally licensed (me and my 5 year old [at the time] little girl, investing massive amounts of walking time in the heat, about $1,700.00 in notary fees, certifications, updates, filings and making sure that taxes were paid, it is really pathetic that someone would want to take advantage of the fact that I've had to take off for a while to put my time into my child's health and education because she can't function at normal levels for her age due to 4-5 brain shunt revisions, a stroke and an acute brain tumor, eye surgery for strabismus, and numerous hours of physical, occupational and speech therapy, it seems pathetic that someone would try to pull a coup against the company and steal from themselves and others in this business to take the GENERAL purpose and narrow the field down to ONLY ONE VERY LIMITED area on the basis of some fool's ideal that "if the owner can't correctly spell the word "entrepreneur" on the IRS filing then how can you expect her to run a business and be responsible for money?  I don't believe this; however I've seen much more ignorant allegations against people than this in my life.  This isn't the first time.  One time even involved a beveled glass french door; however that's VERY PERSONAL and I can't go into details.  Our country was founded on the principal of entrepreneurship and no matter how many times it's mis-spelled on an IRS form, it seems that the agent that allowed the document's filing and didn't reject it based on a spelling error and "actually did their job by counting space and numbers, figures, and accuracy and precision based on evidence and facts which are both in documented paper form, filed and scanned into a database and backed up on multiple hard drives, how can one miss the basic principals of the great spirit of America.  They don't like our country and think that because people have to use spell checkers and dictionaries and were taught to free think and free write and to move on fast to either go back and edit and correct errors if you had time instead of trying to be "miss perfect", then you need to go find a country where you can live in harmony in a perfect little world where nothing goes wrong.  We founded our companies and have worked a hell of a lot harder than ONE SIMPLE SPELLING ERROR and really, if you look at varying languages, interpretations and changes in our vocabulary and system over the years, then you would know that the same words do, can and have had several spellings over the years.  I KNOW.  I learned to spell from actually reading an old dictionary and I saw the changes and the differences.  The reason was because I read an adult dictionary as a child and not a pictionary learning to spell with simple concepts.  No matter what, some situations are geared simplistically and no matter how simple you think, you're always specialized and no matter how long they have to wait on you, you've already passed them in literary comprehension ten-fold.  I'm proud to be who I am, what I know, what we've accomplished and am not going to accept being mentally brutalized by a spelling bee queen.  To tell you the truth, participation was NOT OPTIONAL.  My companies have done very well and I do know just exactly how much money we make because I don't even get to get out of our house due to keeping track of EVERYTHING.  My paycheck supports my end of the company instead of taking out loans from SBA, SCORE, or Federal Stimulus Monies.  My loans are establishments with local and reputable companies in very small and equitable amounts that have not been abused or defaulted on and I am a VERY GOOD BUSINESS-WOMAN.  This is ALL I have to SAY.  I'm proud to be a business-woman in my country and I refuse to stoop to the level of a fool with nothing good to say about me or my child other than ordering and demanding me to do their bidding.  My team is the best.  LLO'C
